As Independence Day nears...I thought I would spotlight one of the main family-gathering areas in our homes---the KITCHEN.
Close your eyes with me and imagine your favorite moments growing up. How many of those moments involved good food, family gatherings, and tons of laughter?
I remember my parents' long bar area filled with the best food and behind it, our formal dinner table with more food/desserts/drinks. It was always set up for family members/guests to serve themselves and then we would eat at the informal dining table and spread out into the living room with our plates...eating, laughing, filming videos on our old VHS.
I also remember family gatherings at my Aunt & Uncle's house with the same relaxed vibe...eating, laughing, story-telling, taking photos, videos. This is where family traditions are anchored. Our family even has a red plate for each of the children and grandchildren that we use during holiday dinners that says 'You Are Special.' A special message is written on the back of each plate along with our name. That will be a tradition that I will continue with my family.
So, as we begin planning for our 4th of July and Summer celebrations, remember that the life of your kitchen is not measured by how old the flooring, paint, countertops, or appliances are. The life of your kitchen is measured by the love, laughs, memories, and traditions created within it.
The smallest improvements like a new picture hung on the wall, an old plate that serves as a conversation piece, or a new tea towel and rugs, can brighten up an old space and make it feel new again--loved again.
